Law firm ROI

Every missed call is a client you paid to lose

The five-minute math on what unanswered phones cost your firm.

You spent real money to make that phone ring. Marketing, referrals, years of reputation. Then it rings while everyone is with a client, it goes to voicemail, and the caller does what callers do: hangs up and dials the next firm on the list. A person with a legal problem does not wait for a callback. They hire whoever answers.

A worked example

The numbers below are illustrative. Plug in your own and the logic holds. Say your firm misses 10 calls a week. Most callers who reach voicemail simply hang up, so assume 8 of those 10 never call back. If even one of those callers a week would have signed, and an average retainer is worth $2,500, that is $2,500 a week walking to the firm down the street. Call it $10,000 a month.

Now compare the two ways to fix it. A part-time receptionist costs $1,800 to $2,500 a month and covers office hours only. An AI voice agent costs a few hundred dollars a month, answers instantly, and works nights and weekends, which is when a surprising share of calls arrive.

What the agent actually does

  • Answers every call on the first ring, 24 hours a day, including the Sunday night calls that become Monday retainers.
  • Books consultations straight into your calendar.
  • Screens the matter and takes structured intake notes, so your team sees name, number, and case type at a glance.
  • Hands off to a human immediately when the call needs one.

Compare the fixes. A part-time receptionist covers office hours only. The agent costs a fraction of that, never takes lunch, and answers at 11 pm when someone has just been served, arrested, or fired. If recovering one missed caller a month covers its cost, everything above that is margin. For most firms we audit, it does.

You do not need the agent to be perfect. You need it to be better than voicemail, and voicemail sets a very low bar.

If you want the real version of this math for your office, count one week of missed calls and bring us the number. The audit is free, and the arithmetic takes ten minutes. Then check it against the payback formula yourself.
